Israel’s education system is rigidly divided into four separate streams, serving “secular” Jews, religious Jews, Arabs, and Haredim (ultra-Orthodox Jews.) In this session we will examine how each of these streams operates, as well as issues related to education quality and equity. We will discuss the language of instruction in Arab schools, the fact that in Haredi schools most of the boys do not study math, science, or English, and options for breaking at least some of the boundaries between these four streams.
